SNAPSHOT BACKUP ADP PC PAYROLL FOR WINDOWS
Depending on your backup software, you may not be able to tape an open SQL database.
The scheduled snapshot backup utility will take a "snapshot" of your SQL database, and
copy it to a Backup folder (which you will create) in the \ADP directory on your server.
No matter what your current backup strategy may be, we strongly recommend utilizing the snapshot
backup as an additional precaution.
All of the following steps take place on the server where the ADP database resides.
1. In the \ADP directory, create a new folder named "Backup".
2. In the \ADP\SQLBase directory, use notepad to create two files, Backups.bat and Backups.sql
as follows (Assumes "d:" is the drive on which the ADP folder resides):
Backups.bat should read:
d:\
cd\adp\sqlbase
del d:\adp\backup\*.log
del d:\adp\backup\*.bkp
sqltalk noconnect bat input=backups.sql output=backups.aud
exit
Backups.sql should read:
set server server1;
backup snapshot from pay4win to d:\adp\backup on server;
exit;
Note: If your \ADP\Sqlbase directory is not located at the route of the "C:" or the "D:" drive (e.g., in an \Applications or \HR directory), or the \Sqlbase directory is not located under the \ADP directory, you will need to edit the above files so that the pathing of the files matches the actual pathing on the server.
You can download Backups.bat and Backups.sql from the menu on the left. You will need to
choose the appropriate downloads, depending on whether your \ADP directory is located on the "C:" drive or "D:"
drive.
If the \ADP directory resides on a drive other than "C:" or "D:", you will need to edit both files using Notepad, and change the drive letter to match yours. To open the Backups.bat file, right click and choose "Edit". To open Backups.sql, right click and choose "Open With" then choose notepad.

3. From the \ADP\SQLBase directory, double-click on Backups.bat to test file function. You should see the black
DOS window for 5-30 seconds.
4. Go to the \ADP\Backup directory. You should see Pay4win.bkp and one or more log files. The time and date
stamps should reflect the time that you executed the Backups.bat file. You need to set your normal tape backup to tape
the entire \ADP\Backup directory. If your backup software allows you to tape open files, the database is located in the \Sqlbase\Pay4win folder. This does not mean you do not need to back up any other ADP files. Depending on the features you are using, other files may need to be backed up as well. This should be discussed with your installer.
5. Next you will need to use the automated task scheduler to be sure the backup utility runs every day. The utility will need to run at a time when everyone is logged out of the Payroll software. We usually set it to run about 30 minutes to an hour before the normal tape backup runs.
The automated task scheduler can be set up using the Windows® task scheduler wizard or at a Dos command prompt. The Dos directions are set forth below.
- Go to Start->Run. Type "command" or "cmd" to open a command prompt.
- Type without brackets: [at 23:00 /every:m,t,w,th,f,s,su "d:\adp\sqlbase\backups.bat"]
Note: This example will run the backup utility at 11:00pm from the ADP\SQLBase located on the D: drive. You will need to change the time and drive letter as appropriate.
- Press Enter. You should get a message indicating that a new job has been added.
- Type without brackets: [at]
You should see the Job ID, Day, Time, and Command that will be run. Verify that this information is correct.
You're done! You may want to change the time on the server to be sure the scheduled snapshot backup runs. Or you could simply check
the date and time stamps the next day, making sure the date and time modified reflects the time in step 5.
